Airsource Heat Pumps

A heat pump in itself is not an energy source but a technology which makes use of the heating potential in air, ground, mountain and water (sea, freshwater, groundwater). Even excess heat from waste water, industrial processes and air flue can be utilized. Electric power is only used for the operation of fans and compressors in the heat pump. A high level of technical knowledge, both in terms of projecting and operation, is required to make sure that a heat pump installation is successful.

For smaller installations in private homes, the heat pump is dimensioned for approximately 60-70 % of the maximum need for heating.


Also, to secure a stable operation of the installation, it can be useful with a buffer tank which may be an integrated water heater. To make sure that the room temperature is satisfactory when the outside temperature is low, the buffer tank can be fitted with an additional immersion heater that also will function as an extra back-up in the event of operational failure or when the installation is serviced (for example bio, gas or oil).

An air/water heat pump utilizes heat from the air outside and transfers the heat to water. It can be used for both space and tap water heating. Utilizing the heat from the air outside is most common for domestic heat pumps.


It is usually chosen because of its fairly low cost of installation but in terms of yearly COP and life span, its performances in general is not as good as other kinds of heat pumps. The reason for this is that the available heat does not correspond to the building’s need for heating. When the outside temperature is 3°C and below, it requires defrosting and a heating cable to divert the meltwater. When dimensioning a system one has to be attentive towards fan noise and the distance to the neighbours. A heat pump that uses the outside air as heat source to heat tap water will have a very high temperature lift for long periods throughout a year. During extremes of cold weather of -15 to -20°C the heat pump will not be able to deliver hot water.
